Plumbing & heating: How to win customers online, predictably

Emergency call-outs, boiler swaps, service contracts. How plumbing firms get found online and stop losing enquiries.

Boiler dead on a Sunday evening. Burst pipe in the cellar. The old combi finally gives up. In that moment the customer doesn't shop around for long - they ring the first firm they find that actually picks up. And more often than not, that isn't you.

Plumbing and heating is one of the best trades going when it comes to winning customers online. Demand is huge, the jobs are high value, and most of your competitors do almost nothing online. So whoever gets set up properly wins enquiries predictably. Without burning a marketing budget.

In this article I'll show you exactly how plumbing and heating firms get found online, which enquiries actually make money, and why being reachable matters more for you than for almost any other trade.

First understand which customers you win online

Plumbing and heating isn't one market, it's four. And every customer searches differently. Once you get that, you build your online presence the right way:

  • Emergency call-outs: Boiler down, burst pipe, blocked drain. Searches instantly, rings instantly, decides in minutes. Whoever answers first wins.
  • Boiler and heating replacement: Old combi or system boiler out, new boiler or heat pump in. High job value, customer compares 2-3 firms.
  • Bathroom renovation: Full refit, planned over weeks. Here trust, real project photos and a professional presence are what count.
  • Maintenance and contracts: Annual boiler service, service plans. Predictable recurring revenue - often underrated.

The beauty of it: someone who meets you on an emergency call-out rings you again for the boiler swap. A good online presence feeds all four areas at once.

How your customer actually searches

Forget what you think people type. Look at what they actually put into Google:

  • "emergency plumber Manchester"
  • "boiler repair near me"
  • "new boiler installation Bristol"
  • "bathroom renovation cost Leeds"
  • "plumber weekend Sheffield"
  • "boiler service price"

Two things stand out. The town name is almost always in there. And for emergencies the words "emergency" or "weekend" come along too. These are exactly the terms you need to cover on your website and Google Business Profile - otherwise you simply don't show up.

Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website

For local searches Google shows the "local pack" first - the box with a map and three results right under the search bar. Whoever sits in there gets the call. Whoever doesn't simply doesn't exist for the searcher. And that local pack is fed mostly by your Google Business Profile, not your website.

What plumbing and heating firms almost always get wrong:

  • Wrong category chosen ("plumber" only, instead of also "heating contractor", "boiler installer")
  • No emergency hours set - even though that's your most valuable selling point
  • Barely any photos: no bathrooms, no installed boilers, no team, no vans
  • Reviews never replied to

Set your correct categories, add honest opening and emergency hours, and upload at least 15 real photos. That's two hours of work and it beats any expensive advert. We've broken down how to set the profile up fully in our article on local SEO.

A fast website that helps instantly in an emergency

When a customer lands on your site mid-emergency, they have no patience. If the page takes 6 seconds to load on a phone, they're gone. If they can't find your phone number in 3 seconds, they're gone. Your website has to do one thing perfectly: trigger a call.

What a good plumbing site needs:

  • Phone number right at the top, tap to call - on every page, not buried on a contact page
  • "Emergency call-out" as its own clearly visible section with hours of availability
  • Separate pages for each service: heating, bathrooms, emergency, servicing - not everything crammed onto one page
  • Loads in under a second, so Google ranks you higher and the customer doesn't bounce
  • Real photos of actual bathrooms and heating jobs, not generic stock

Google ranks individual pages for individual search terms. If you have "boiler replacement", "bathroom renovation" and "emergency call-out" each as its own page, you can be found for all three. Squeeze it all onto the homepage and you rank properly for none of them.

Trust decides the big jobs

On an emergency call-out, speed wins. On a £4,000 boiler swap or a full bathroom refit, trust wins. The customer isn't letting a stranger into their home if the presence looks dodgy.

What builds trust:

  • Real reviews with names and text, visible on the site
  • Gas Safe registration shown clearly - for heating work this is non-negotiable
  • Manufacturer accreditations (Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal) - customers recognise these
  • Team photos instead of stock images: people trust faces
  • Before-and-after photos of real projects
A customer spending £8,000 on a heat pump will Google your firm first. What they see next decides whether they ring you or scroll past.

Build reviews systematically

After your Google profile, reviews are the second biggest factor in ranking in the local pack. And honestly, most plumbing firms never actively ask for them. Yet your customers are delighted after a solved emergency or a beautiful new bathroom - you just have to ask.

  1. After every happy job, send a WhatsApp with a review link
  2. QR code on the invoice that goes straight to your review page
  3. Mention it kindly at the bathroom sign-off
  4. Reply to every review - including the critical ones, especially the critical ones

Aim for a handful of new reviews a month, consistently. Over time that lifts you above any competitor who doesn't bother.

The biggest lever in plumbing: missed emergency calls

This is where most money is left on the table in plumbing - literally. Emergencies happen in the evening, at night, at the weekend. Exactly when nobody's in the office. You're on a job, having dinner, in bed. The phone rings and nobody answers.

What happens next: the customer rings the next firm. Their emergency won't wait for you. And a missed emergency call isn't just that one job - it's also the boiler swap next year and the recommendation to the neighbour that you never get.

The fix isn't another person on the phone. An AI reception answers 24/7, takes the key details - name, address, type of emergency - and sends you a summary on your phone straight away. You then decide whether to head out now or call back in the morning. But the enquiry is saved, instead of landing with a competitor.

In short: In plumbing and heating you win online through three things - getting found (Google profile + fast site), showing trust (reviews + Gas Safe) and always being reachable, especially for call-outs. The biggest lost revenue hides in unanswered calls.

Your plan for the next 30 days

You don't have to do it all at once. Here's a realistic way in:

  1. Week 1: Tidy up your Google Business Profile - categories, emergency hours, 15 real photos.
  2. Week 2: Test your website on a phone. Phone number instantly visible? Loads fast? If not, make a plan.
  3. Week 3: Set up a review routine. Ask five happy customers for a Google review.
  4. Week 4: Sort out reachability. Who answers the emergency phone in the evening and at weekends? If the honest answer is "often nobody", you've found your biggest lever.

Bottom line

Plumbing and heating firms have a huge advantage online: the demand is there, the jobs are valuable, and the competition is asleep digitally. Whoever has a clean Google profile, a fast site with a clearly visible phone number, and collects reviews systematically lands in the local pack and wins enquiries predictably.

The decisive difference in this trade stays the same: reachability. Emergencies don't wait. Whoever is reachable in the evening and at the weekend grabs the high-value jobs others sleep through. That's exactly what we build websites and set up reception for - you do the trade, we make sure no enquiry slips away.
